A Bit About Me

As a child, Shannon always answered the question "what do you want to be when you grow up?" with the same answer: a writer. Now, that lifelong passion for storytelling has led her childhood dream to become a reality.

Shannon Rainey is an award-winning poet, short story writer, and aspiring novelist. Her work has appeared in Stillpoint Magazine, The Allegheny Review, Ramifications Art & Literary Magazine, and Alabama’s Best Emerging Poets 2019 by Z Publishing. She is a recipient of the 2020 Academy of American Poets Award, 2021 Barber Poetry Award, the Alice Wingo Essay Award, and a two-time winner of the Olde Leafe Prize, in 2021 for her poem “Dionaea muscipula” and 2019 for her short story, “Syrinx”. Her short story also won first place in the senior short story division of Huntsville Literary Association’s 2017 Young Writers Contest.

In 2021, Shannon graduated cum laude from Berry College, where she earned a BAH in creative writing. She served as the editor-in-chief for the college’s literary magazine, Ramifications, in 2020 and 2021. Shannon also completed her senior honors thesis: the first half of a gothic fantasy novel titled Just One Bite.

Shannon considers herself a professional bookworm, a caffeine addict, and an old soul. When not writing, she enjoys painting, crocheting, and playing with her three cats.
